With a super focused concept in lifestyle: „The global hub of modern lifestyle“ (in Portuguese: „O ponto central do estilo de vida contemporâneo“), the show promises to have big news for the future seasons! The fair, which has lasted 13 years, had its starting point in 2001, in the city of Köln (Germany), going through Berlin and Barcelona and finally settling again in Berlin since 2009. The event draws many fashionistas and retail brands from around the world and, fittingly for Berlin, is held in a fantastically quirky venue: the defunct Tempelhof Airport in the heart of Berlin, which ceased flights in 2008 but continues to cut an architecturally and culturally imposing figure in the city – but these days fashion lights up the runway instead of planes.
The Bread & Butter Festival is held twice a year: January and July, parallel to the Berlin Fashion Week. It presents a select portfolio of good brands , including leading brands already known worldwide, and new up and coming brands which are often launched at this show. Circulating through this event are around 500-600 exhibitors from the following sectors: Denim, Sportswear, Street Fashion, Function Wear and Casual Dressed Up. Each year the fair innovates with different advertising concepts to prospect new brands and new visitors. For the January 2014 edition the ad campaign’s strapline is refreshingly direct: „Ich bin ein Berliner”, it means in Portuguese: „Eu sou um berlinense“). Down the years and with all this marketing work, the Bread & Butter Festival has become an important event in the calendar of the European fashion industry. Visiting this trade show the Fashion Bubbles website has spotted all the prevailing trends from the Old World at the moment in order to keep you update as an expert fashion specialist.
PRINTS, COLORS AND PATTERNS: Very colorful prints, neon, patterned shades (floral, petit poá, geometric shapes) and details in spikes, tacks, fringes, both in clothing and in bags, shoes or sneakers are very in this Spring/Summer. The floral and animal prints types are still super strong in the next seasons and are also presented in the Autumn pieces, such as coats and shoes as well.
DETAILS THAT MAKE ALL THE DIFFERENCE ON YOUR LOOK: Vintage type collars are the hit of the season, used in dresses, shirts and overalls. The use of lace is super in this Summer, taking place on sleeves, collars, necklines and bars skirts or dresses. The lace lends a romantic and sensual touch to the pieces, so be sure to include in your wardrobe a piece of cloth with this material as a joker card. MIX OF FABRICS IN THE SAME PIECE OF CLOTH IS TRENDY: A mixture of different fabrics in the same piece of cloth converge vintage and urban styles (eg. pieces of hooded flourish, or sweaters of wool with lace details). Woven type like canvas, tulle (“tutu”) or details on transparency are also a strong trend for the next seasons.
COLLARS OF THE COATS: Coats with soft collars and tips are also a hit in the new collections. PRINT PIECES: Pieces with crazy prints and photos on sneakers, bonnets, clothes and even underwear hint at an even more stylish take on the urban look.
VINYL IS BACK: The old vinyl fabric is taking back its place in skirts and jackets. TREND IN ACCESSORIES: In terms of accessories the “maxinecklaces” are the brightest star, supplementing basic outfits. The beautiful and practical scarfs (the popular known name in Portuguese is: „echarpes“) give the final touch to the European visual. THE MENSWEAR: The menswear is becoming casual and even more charming. Your grandfather may have been an unwitting style icon because the bonnet type hat („boina“, in Portuguese) he may have worn, was paraded with charm and style at the Bread & Butter Festival in 2014.
It was worn with scarves, vests and the wrinkled denims that are taking over the male universe for the new seasons. In terms of footwear, heavy leather booties, sneakers, or shoes with textures dominate. They promise to be the hit of the Spring/Summer 2014 and Autumn/Winter 2014-2015, for a man with a cool style. UNLIMITED CREATIVITY: Creativity has plenty of room in this big fair. But some brands appeal to the lowest common denominator of consumerist behaviour simply hoping to gain even more consumers by focusing on funny and different products. Other brands have bet on a more customized creativity to attract more visitors to their booths: one of the brands offered a stylist day: visitors had access to a full table with many different materials such as scissors, glue, thread, needles, sprays, paints and scraps fabrics to inspire and encourage visitors uncover their inner fashion designer.
The next B&B event will happen during the Berlin Summer from 8th to 12th of July (2014). The news of this show will be a representative changing in the structure in terms of organization and concept of the fair.
The event, which usually happens over three days, will be held over more days, allowing the end user to visit the fair, which does not happen today. Currently the show is only open to brands, retailers and press.
